The Holy Quran consists of 114 surahs, including Surah Zilzal ( Arabic: سورة الزلزلة ) written Surah Al-Zalzalah, which is the 99th surah, but what is the subject matter of surah zilzal that we will know exactly in this article and learn all the facts about it including the meaning, the interpretation of it, and how it explains the Day of Resurrection and the state of the earth and what will happen to people on this day especially after the Earth’s revolution and the great earthquake that will happen, The surah also explains how people will be judged for their good or bad deeds, and the result of their actions in this world, and how will Allah reveal to the earth to utter what happened on it and the actions of man on earth. Surah zalzalah is presented in Juz’ 30 with 8 verses.
It takes its name from the verse 1 where the word “الزلزلة” Al- Zalzalah means “The Quake” which will happen at the end of the world and the earth brings out everything inside it, with the astonishment of man from the horror of what is happening and the acknowledgment that God commanded her to do so, and rewarding people for what they have done in the world.
What is the meaning of surah az zilzal?
Surah Az zilzal, or Zilzal, or Al- Zalzalah (In Arabic: الزلزلة) which means ” The Earthquake” in English, but what is the subject matter of surah Zilzal?
Sura zalzala doesn’t differ in the reason for its name from many of the Surahs of the Holy Qur’an. It is commensurate with its content and is compatible with its beginning, and this is the case of many of the surahs of the book, and it is worth mentioning that Surat Al-Waqi’ah, Al-Qari’ah, and Al-Ghashiah are also names of the Day of Resurrection and were named so because they deal with talking about the horrors of this day as it fits in its name with its reading, and Allah knows best.
The scholars considered that surah al zalzalah is considered half of the Quran because it talks about the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, and almost half of the Qur’an speaks in this matter. Therefore, many of them considered that Surat Al-Zalzalah is equivalent to half the Quran.
The surah depicted what will happen on the Day of Resurrection in terms of changing the features of the earth, the most important of which is its movement and earthquake, and these verses led to the emergence of strong symptoms, and these verses may appear, and they appeared in their appearance again, and they may shake them.
It gives a description for the Day of Judgment, in which the Earth will give off a terrible earthquake and people will be separated into different categories to see the results.

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
إِذَا زُلۡزِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ زِلۡزَالَهَا (1) وَأَخۡرَجَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ أَثۡقَالَهَا (2) وَقَالَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا لَهَا (3) يَوۡمَئِذٖ تُحَدِّثُ أَخۡبَارَهَا (4) بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوۡحَىٰ لَهَا (5) يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَصۡدُرُ ٱلنَّاسُ أَشۡتَاتٗا لِّيُرَوۡاْ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ (6) فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرٗا يَرَهُۥ (7) وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٖ شَرّٗا يَرَهُۥ (8)

When the earth shook with its earthquake (1) and the earth brought forth its burdens (2) and he said, “Reply what is theirs” (3) On that day you will tell it’s news (4) that your Lord has revealed it to it (5) On that day, people will issue scattered shares to see their deeds (6) So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it (7) and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it (8).
Surah Zilzal Tafseer
1-When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake.
In its introduction, the surah deals with one of the most prominent events of the Day of Resurrection, when the stationary earth trembles severely, and is shaken by a great earthquake.
2-And the earth discharges its burdens.
The wording of all that is in its interior, and what is in it of bodies, minerals, and others, is pronounced in a scene that suggests that it relieves its internal loads, then ripples with it in strong waves, and dates more.
3-And the man says, “What is wrong with it?”
This scene is accompanied by the astonishment of mankind of what is happening to the earth; It is as if they are drunk without being drunk; No one knows what to do, so much so that he wonders, bewildered and fearful; He says as the Lord Almighty told: (And the man said, What is hers),
4-That Day, it will report its news
What is meant by its news is that it tells about the actions of every person in his life.
And on how to update it, there are three sayings:
- One of them: is that Allah Almighty turns her into a talking animal, so she talks about that.
- The second: is that Allah Almighty speaks about it.
- Third: It is a statement that takes the place of speech.

Because your Allah has inspired (commanded) it
Al-Bukhari said: It was revealed to it
It appears that this is implied [meaning] authorized.
Shabib bin Bishr said, on the authority of Ikrimah, on the authority of Ibn Abbas: (On that day, it will tell it’s news) He said: Allah said to it: Tell me, and it said.
Mujahid said: (He revealed to her), meaning: his command.
Al-Qurazi said: He ordered her to split from them.
6That day, the people will be separated into categories to be shown the result of their deeds.
Allah illustrates for us the condition of the creatures on the Day of Resurrection, and they have been divided.
7-So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,
8-And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
Whoever does the weight of a small ant will see his reward in the Hereafter, and whoever does the weight of a small ant will see his punishment in the Hereafter.
It is The ultimate encouragement to do good, even if it is small, and to discourage doing evil, even if it is despicable.

Why was surah zilzal revealed?
There is no definitive reason for the revelation of surah al zalzalah in the books of interpretation and hadiths, but there is a reason for some verses such as
إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا
When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake.
It is revealed due to the many questions from the unbelievers to the Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) about the Day of Judgment and his date.
So this verse was revealed, and the signs of this day were mentioned to them without a statement of its date so that they would know that they will not know when this day will be when the creatures will be presented to their Lord, so he will judge them with his justice and mercy, so he rewards those who obey him and avoids his prohibitions and punishes those who disobey him, and that this reckoning will be accurate and includes all deeds, whether small or great.
فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرٗا يَرَهُۥ
وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٖ شَرّٗا يَرَهُۥ
As for the reason for the revelation of this verse:
It is narrated that when a verse was revealed:وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا}
{And they feed the poor, the orphan and the captive to food for their love, the needy and the orphan and the captive}, the Muslims believed that they would not be recompensed for a little good if they offered it to people, and others believed that they are only guilty of the Fire or that they will be held accountable as a lie. For those who commit major sins, then Allah Almighty revealed: {So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it}.
And it also was narrated that these verses were revealed about two men, and that is when a verse was revealed:وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَام عَلَى حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا
{And they feed the poor, the orphan and the captive for its love, the needy, the orphan, and the captive}, and the questioner would come to one of them and ask him to give him something to give him, for he said: What is the reward for this acorn? As for the other, he was negligent in committing a minor sin and said: There is nothing for me from this sin, so Allah revealed these verses desiring easy good and warning against easy sin.
When explaining what is the subject matter of surah zilzal, it is found that surah zalzaal is one of the surahs that came in the incident of its revelation, an honorable hadith. On the authority of them – where he said: “When the earthquakes, its earthquake was sent down(إذا زلزلت الأرض زلزالها), and Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq – may Allah be pleased with him – was sitting and he cried, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said to him, What makes you cry, Abu Bakr? He said: This surah made me cry, so the Messenger of Allah(PBUH) said: If you did not sin and did not sin, then Allah Almighty would have created a nation after you who would sin and sin, so they would be forgiven.
When was surah al Zalzalah revealed?
Surah az zilzal was revealed after Surah al-Nisa, which was revealed in the period between the Treaty of Hudaibiya and the Battle of Tabuk, before Surah Al-Hadid.
It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in Makkah before the migration to Madinah.
Is surah zilzal Makki or madni?
Surah zalzaal is a Madani one, as we said It was revealed to Muhammad the messenger of Allah (PBUH) in Makkah before the migration to Madinah, and it is located in the 30th part of the Noble Qur’an, and its arrangement is from the 99th Noble Qur’an, with 8 verses.
There is a difference of opinion between it being Meccan or Medinan surah.
We find that Ibn Masud, Ata, Jabir, and Mujahid said it is a Meccan surah, and also Ibn Abbas supported this view. But On the contrary, Qatadah and Muqatil said that it is Medinan, and another statement of Ibn Abbas also has been cited in support of this view.
The belief that it is a Medinan surah comes from a tradition from Abu Said Khudri, which Ibn Abi Hatim has related to him. He says: When the verse “So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it, was relieved, I said: “O Messenger of Allah, shall I see my deeds? The Holy Messenger replied yes. Did I submit: And every major sin? He also replied yes. Did I say: And the minor sins too? He replied yes.
At that time I exclaimed that I would be ruined. The Prophet Muhammad said: Rejoice, O Abu Sa’id, for each good act will be equal to ten good acts like it. The reason for believing that this surah is Medinan is that Abu Sa’ld Khudri was an inhabitant of Medina and reached maturity after the Battle of Uhud.
Surah zilzal benefits
Many hadiths have been mentioned about the virtue of Surah Al-Zalzalah and what is the subject matter of surah will, in which one hadith is authentic and the rest are either weak or denounced.
- In which the Messenger of Allah(PBUH) says:
“When you shake, it is equal to half of the Qur’an, and say, Qul Ya Ay’yuh Al Kafirun, it is equal to a quarter of the Qur’an, Qul Hu Allahu ‘ahad is equivalent to a third of the Qur’an.
عن عبد الله بن عبّاس -رضي الله عنه وعن أبيه- الذي يقول فيه رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وسلّم
إِذَا زُلْزلَتُ تَعدِلُ نصفَ القُرآنِ، وَ قُلْ يَا أَيُّهَا الْكَافِرُونَ تَعْدِلُ رُبْعَ القُرْآنَ، وَ قُلْ هُوَ اللهُ أَحَدٌ تَعْدِلُ ثُلُثَ القُرْآنَ”.
- And there was also an authentic hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them – on the authority of a man who came to the Prophet(PBUH) and asked him to recite the Qur’an to him. He could not pronounce it due to the heaviness of his tongue and his advanced age. Finally, the man asked the Prophet (PBUH) to recite a comprehensive surah to him, “Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, recite it {When the earthquakes, an earthquake hits him.} And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
” فأقرَأه رسولُ اللهِ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّم {إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا} حتَّى بلَغ : {مَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَرَهُ * وَمَنْ يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَرَهُ}
The man said: By Him who has sent you with the truth, I don’t care if I do more than it until Allah has cast it.
قال الرَّجُلُ: والَّذي بعَثك بالحقِّ ما أُبالي ألَّا أزيدَ عليها حتَّى ألقى اللهَ”
- On the authority of Abu Abdullah, peace be upon him, that he said:
“Do not get tired of reciting: {When the earth shakes with its earthquake} [Al-Zalzala: 1], for whoever recites it in his prayers, Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, will never be affected by it, nor will it be shaken or shaken by it. from the scourges of this world until he dies, and when he dies, a generous angel descends upon him from Allah, So he sits at his head, and he says: O Angel of death, be kind to the guardian of Allah, for he used to frequently remind me and recite this surah a lot. His soul was expelled, and the angel of death is still with him until he orders him to seize his soul, and if the covering is revealed to him, he sees his places in heaven, so he brings out his soul in the most convenient way of treatment, then sends his soul to heaven and seventy thousand angels take it to heaven”.
وعن الرسول صل الله عليه وسلم قال: “لا تملوا من قراءة سورة إذا زلزلت الأرض زلزالها. فإنه من قرأها في نوافله لم يصبه الله عز وجل بزلزلة أبدًا، ولم يمت بها ولا بصاعقة ولا بآفة من آفات الدنيا حتى يموت. فإذا مات نزل عليه ملك كريم فيقعد عند رأسه فيقول له الله يا ملك الموت ارفق بولي الله. فإنه كان كثيراً ما يذكرني ويكثر من تلاوة هذه السورة، فيقول ملك الموت: قد أمرني ربي أن أسمع له وأطيع ولا أخرج روحه حتى يأمرني بذلك. فإذا أمرني أخرجت روحه فيرى منازله في الجنة. ثم يشيع روحه إلى الجنة 70 ألف ملك يبادرون بها إلى الجنة”.
- Surah Al-Zalzalah protects against the malice of the accursed Satan, especially when recited before going to sleep.
- Also, it helps people to get rid of the confusion, and help manage things.
- Reading surah zalzaal helps to increase goodness and sustenance and Some say that it is better to read surah zilzal
with Surah, Al-Waqi’ah to seek sustenance from Allah Almighty.
- Surah zalzala helps to fix family problems and reduce conflicts.
