10 Incredible Benefits of Sujud al Shukr You Need to Know

sujud al shukr is one of the ways of worshiping Allah and one of the types of prostration in Islam. It is a prostration on the ground like the rest of the prostrations stipulated in Islamic law, and a person can perform it at any time he wants, and it expresses the thanks of the creature to its Creator. This is where its linguistic name comes from. It is particularly confirmed when a blessing is renewed or when calamity is repelled, and it is also confirmed after performing the obligatory prayers. It differs in the method of performing it and its legal ruling between the schools of jurisprudence

How to perform sujud al shukr?

sujud al shukr is performed by performing one prostration, not two prostrations as in prayer, and it is without bowing or other pillars of prayer, so that this prostration is not included in the prostrations of one of the prayers performed by the worshiper, but rather is one of the prostrations that are outside of prayer, there is no takbir or salaam, rather it is just prostration.

The issue of the conditions for sujud al shukr and whether or not the conditions for prayer are required for it is one of the issues on which there are multiple points of view among Muslim jurists. Muslim jurists have two opinions on this issue, which are:

  • For sujud al shukr, the conditions of prayer are required. Some jurists have said that the written conditions of prayer, or the conditions of the Sunnah prayer itself, are required for the prostration of gratitude.

Of complete purity; The purity of the major impurity and the purity of the minor impurity, and it is required to face the Qiblah and cover the private parts

  • And other conditions that must be met in order to perform the prayer. This opinion is the opinion of some of the Maliki jurists who permitted prostration of gratitude, and it is the opinion of the jurists in the Shafi’i school of thought, and it is also the opinion of the jurists in the Hanbali school of thought.

The conditions of prayer are not required for the prostration of gratitude. Some jurists believe that the conditions of prayer are not required for the prostration of gratitude. Rather, the prostration of gratitude is permissible without fulfilling any of the previous conditions, or other conditions of prayer.

This opinion is the opinion of some of the Malikis who say that the prostration of gratitude is permissible, and he chose this opinion. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah is a Hanbali jurist.

When is sujud al shukr  performed?

sujud al shukr is recommended in the following two cases:

Regarding good tidings and joy

it is recommended to perform sujud al shukr in cases of joy, and in announcing good tidings that a person loves, on both the religious and worldly levels. Like someone giving good news of the conquest of a country.

Or the conversion of a nation to Islam, or rejoicing for himself or for someone he loves; Such as getting a job, a happy child, success, or anything that brings happiness to his heart.

When the harm is removed

it is recommended to perform the prostration of gratitude in cases of removing embarrassment, harm, and harm, and this also applies to the religious and worldly levels.

Such as the retreat of the enemy, or its defeat and departure from a Muslim country, or the affliction being lifted from Muslims, or allowing prayers in mosques.

Such as opening memorization centers in countries where recitation of the Qur’an is prohibited, or removing worldly affliction from a man or those related to him. Such as the acquittal of a prisoner, forgiveness of debt, recovery of the sick, or any harm that is removed from a man, or from someone who belongs to him and loves him.

What is the ruling on sujud al shukr?

The jurists differed regarding the ruling on the sujud al shukr, between the Sunnah, the recommendation, and the illegality of sayings. The Hanafi scholars held that the prostration of gratitude is Sunnah, while Imam Abu Hanifa saw it as unlawful, and he used as evidence its Sunnah with what was reported from the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, such as “Abu Bakr, Omar.” , and on”.

As for the Malikis, they are of the well-known opinion of their doctrine that prostration of gratitude is disliked. Imam Ibn al-Hajib, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him, said: “The prostration of gratitude is disliked according to the well-known opinion,” while the Shafi’is and Hanbalis held that prostration of gratitude is desirable.

The virtue of sujud al shukr

Evidence of sujud al shukr from the purified Sunnah is what Abu Dawud narrated in his Sunan on the authority of the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, who said: “I asked my Lord and interceded for my nation, and He gave me a third of my nation.

So I fell down in prostration in thanks to my Lord, then I raised my head and asked. My Lord for my nation, so He gave me a third of my nation, so I fell down, prostrating to my Lord in thanks. Then I raised my head and asked my Lord for my nation, and He gave me the other third, so I fell down, prostrating to my Lord.”

On the authority of Abu Bakra, on the authority of the Prophet, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him: “Whenever a pleasing matter came to him or was given good tidings, he would fall down in prostration, thanking Allah,”.

and on the authority of Abd al-Rahman ibn Ka’b ibn Malik, on the authority of his father, he said: “When Allah turned to him in repentance, he fell down, prostrating.”

Conclusion

Some jurists stated that sujud al shukr is a single prostration, in which it is required that the conditions of prayer be met, such as facing the Qiblah, ablution, and purity. This is the view that most scholars of the Shafi’i and Hanbali schools of thought adhere to.

Another group of jurists stated that it is not a condition that the conditions for prayer be fulfilled, and this is the opinion that most scholars of the Hanafi, Maliki, and Zahiri schools of thought adhere to.
