ihram Clothing: 10 Tips for a Comfortable and Stylish Hajj Journey

ihram Clothing:

Ihram refers to the intention to enter into the ritual of Umrah or Hajj. Umrah or Hajj is not valid without ihram. Allah – Glory be to Him – has set conditions and times for ihram, and prohibitions that are not permissible to be committed during it. By entering ihram for Umrah or Hajj, it is forbidden for a Muslim to do some permissible things until he becomes permissible.

And this includes the man’s dress during ihram, and the conditions related to it so that the Hajj or Umrah pilgrim does not fall into any of the forbidden things of ihram related to Ihram clothing. The following is a detail of the conditions for a man’s Ihram clothing, and some of the general provisions related to ihram.

Conditions for Ihram clothing for men

Ihram clothing for men requires certain conditions that must be met. Among the Ihram clothing conditions are those related to body clothing, and some are related to head clothing, and these conditions are explained below.

Conditions related to body clothing

When entering Ihram clothing, a man wears a loincloth and a robe. As it is stipulated that the Ihram clothing of a man in ihram should not be stitched or something that embodies or oversizes the body parts, such as shirts, pants, and the like. As for the loincloth and the robe.

They are two cloth garments that wrap the body of a man in ihram for Hajj or Umrah. The Izar wraps and covers what is between the navel and the knee, while the robe wraps; It covers the area between the shoulder and the navel, just as it is forbidden for a man to wear socks during his ihram. Any shoe that covers the heel of the foot,

Conditions related to headwear

It is not permissible for a man in Ihram clothing to cover his head or cover it with any head covering, whether it is sewn such as a hat or a hood – which is a multi-shaped head garment. It is also not permissible for him to cover his head with a turban or a ghutra, or anything that is considered to cover the head, even if the man in ihram intentionally covers his head. ; He was obliged to pay a ransom

Issues related to men’s ihram clothing

Among the issues related to men’s Ihram clothing are the following:

1-Holding the Izar for a person in ihram

The opinions of jurists varied regarding the ruling on tying the izaar for Ihram clothing. This is done by connecting one end of it to the other according to two opinions, their explanation is as follows:

  • The Hanafis and the Malikis: They said that it is not permissible for a person in ihram to tie the Izar, and the Hanafis have explained that whoever does that has committed a sin and there is no bloodshed on him, while the Malikis said that he must pay a ransom if he benefits from what he wore, or wears it for a long time; like a whole day; Because this period requires benefit, otherwise no ransom is required.
  • The Shafi’i and Hanbali: They said that it is permissible to tie the garment for a woman in ihram if it is not proven otherwise. Because it is something that is needed to cover the private parts.

2-Fastening the garment with a rope, belt, or the like

There are many opinions of the jurists regarding the ruling on tightening the izaar and fixing it with a rope or something else, with two opinions as follows:

  • The majority: The majority of jurists from the Malikis, the Shafi’is, and the Hanbalis are of the view that it is permissible to fasten the izaar with a rope or something similar, and the Hanbalis stipulated that the rope should not be tied, but rather that some of it be inserted into another, and they stipulated Maliki, this is in addition to wearing the rope specifically for work.
  • Hanafi: They said that it is not permissible to fasten the garment with a rope or something similar. It is permissible for the pilgrim in ihram to fasten his robe with a clip, and the clip is: a tool made of wood or metal, with which something is fastened and held, such as paper or hair.
  • This is because the robe is not considered stitched if it is clasped. Rather, it remains a robe except that it is clasped. As for interlacing the robe to make it look like a sleeveless shirt, it is not permissible, as Ibn Uthaymeen pointed out.

3-Fasten the waistband with a button or pin

All jurists are of the opinion that it is not permissible to fasten the izar with buttons, or something similar, such as pins, with close loops. This is because it becomes morning like stitches; If the person in ihram does that, then he must pay a ransom, but if it is with long-distance sexual intercourse, then there is no problem with that. Because the buttons that are far apart are what is needed to cover the private parts.

4-Cut the garment into two halves

The jurists prohibited the ihram from cutting his garment into two halves, making two tails for it, and wrapping each half on one of the legs until it resembles the shape of a garment, or for the ihram to wear his garment after cutting it at the waist.

Then slit it from the front and from the back, and tie this to the other, and tie this to the other until It becomes like pants; This is because these two methods of slitting the garment make it stitched and require a ransom.

5-Whoever does not find the garment, robe, and sandals

Scholars are of the opinion that it is permissible to wear trousers and socks for someone who cannot find a loincloth, robe, or sandals, and there is no ransom required for him.

He is not obliged to split his trousers and wear them around his waist, according to the majority of Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali scholars, in contrast to the Hanafi school of thought, who said that he should slit his trousers and wear them around his waist.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are certain conditions specific to Ihram clothing for both men and women, and the pilgrim in ihram must adhere to these conditions as specifically mentioned. Therefore, we mentioned in our article a detail of the conditions for Ihram clothing for men.
