how old is the qur’an?

The qur’an is the book of Allah revealed to His servant and Prophet Muhammad, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, in order to bring people from darkness to light, from disbelief to faith, and from polytheism to monotheism.

He sealed the messages with it, brought him life from the dead, guided him from misguidance, and it is Allah’s proof over his creation. Allah Almighty pledged to protect it from distortion and alteration. Therefore Through our article, we will learn about how old is the qur’an.

The day on which the Holy Quran was revealed

The first verses of the qur’an were revealed to the heart of the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – on Monday, thirteen years before the migration to Medina, and the Prophet was forty years old at the time. This was said by a group of companions, followers, and scholars, including: Ibn Abbas and Anas bin Malik. Al-Wahidi, Al-Balqini, Ubaid bin Umair, and Abu Jaafar Al-Baqir.

Among the evidence that proves the revelation of the first verses on Monday is what Imam Muslim reported in his Sahih on the authority of Abu Qatada Al-Ansari – may Allah be pleased with him – that he said: (That is the day on which I was born, and the day on which I was resurrected. Or was it revealed to me in this regard).

Another narration was reported from Shu`bah that he said: (And he was asked about fasting on Mondays and Thursdays? We remained silent about mentioning Thursday because we saw it as an illusion), and Judge Ayadh said that when the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – referred to the day on which the Qur’an was revealed to him, he meant Monday.

This is indicated by the hadith narrations that support this, and Imam Muslim left out mentioning Shu’bah narration. Considering that this was an illusion for him, and it is noteworthy that the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – was forty years old when he was sent, and the qur’an was revealed to him for the first time.

How was the Holy Quran revealed?

As for the description of the revelation of the qur’an for the first time: Imam Al-Qurtubi mentioned in the interpretation of His saying – the Almighty -: (Indeed, We sent it down on a blessed night. Indeed, We are warners), that the blessed night is the Night of Destiny, and it was reported that the revelation of the Qur’an on that night was not an astrologer.

That is, separated, but it was the revelation of one sentence. When Allah sent it down from the Preserved Tablet, then it was sent down to the House of Glory in the lowest heaven, then it was sent down by Gabriel separately to the Messenger of Allah.

And Al-Qurtubi mentioned a saying on the authority of Al-Sha’bi indicating that the purpose of the revelation of the Qur’an on the Night of Power is not its revelation as a whole, but rather the beginning of the revelation of its first verses.

The place where the Holy Quran was revealed

the qur’an was sent down in one piece to the House of Glory from the lowest heaven after it was in the Preserved Tablet, and then it came down after that divided into the heart of the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him.

It has been reported from the Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – that the Qur’an was sent down divided in three places, which are: : The Holy Mecca, including the houses that belong to it, such as Arafat, Mina, and Al-Hudaybiyyah, as well as Medina, and the places that belong to it, such as: Badr, Uhud, and finally the Levant.

That is, the Holy House. The stages of the revelation of the Holy Qur’an. The Holy Qur’an is the last of the heavenly books that Allah revealed to His messengers. To be an argument for people, and evidence of the truthfulness of His prophets and messengers.  The revelation of the Holy Qur’an took place in two stages:

The first stage:

The complete descent of the qur’an to the House of Glory in the lowest heaven. This revelation was indicated by the Almighty’s saying: (The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion);

As the qur’an was revealed in the first stage in the blessed month of Ramadan, specifically on Laylat al-Qadr. Allah Almighty said: (Indeed, We sent it down on the Night of Decree).

The second stage:

the qur’an was revealed in parts through the Trustee of Revelation. Gabriel – peace be upon him -, on the heart of the Messenger – peace and blessings be upon him -; This is indicated by His saying – the Almighty -: (And a Qur’an which We have divided into parts so that you may recite it to the people over a period of time and We have sent it down in a final manner).

The month in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed

Scholars differed in determining the month in which the revelation of the qur’an to the Messenger of Allah began, and they went to several opinions about it, which are explained as follows:

  • The revelation of the qur’an in the blessed month of Ramadan; A group of scholars, including: Al-Wahidi, Ibn Kathir, Muhammad bin Ishaq, Ubaid Allah bin Umair, and Yahya Al-Sarsari, have agreed to this statement, but they differed in determining the day of the month of Ramadan.

It was said: the seventh day of it, and it was said: the fourteenth, and it was said: the seventeenth, as it was narrated on the authority of Abu Ja’far Al-Baqir.

And a group of the companions of the Messenger of Allah went to say that it descended on the twenty-fourth day of the month of Ramadan. That is, the twenty-fifth night; Because they believe that it is the Night of Destiny..

  • In reasoning of what was reported from Wathilah bin Al -Asqa – may Allah be pleased with him – that he said: (The news of Abraham was revealed on the first night of Ramadan.

And the Torah was descended for six fasts from Ramadan, and the Bible was revealed for thirteen nights that were removed from Ramadan, and the ritual of the Qur’an was revealed to the Qur’an. For the twenty-four days of Ramadan.

Conclusion

At the end of the text, the qur’an was revealed to the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, at different times between Mecca and Medina. The reasons for the revelation of the surahs and verses were numerous, and many reasons were given that explain the reason for the revelation of the qur’an at different times
